The Amazing Race 27 - Nov 6/15 Episode Recap

Full Speed Ahead, Captain!

Last episode in Paris, Justin & Diana were the first team to the mat but Phil told them they were still racing and they read the clue that they had to take the train to Rotterdam (Rotterdam is not Amsterdam... that becomes important later.)

Last place was Team Alabama who got hung up at the French rap battle detour because Mom Denise could not find her inner fly girl... James Earl finally snaps at her, "When are we going to switch?" She says she wants to give it two more tries.

-Train Station, Justin & Diana tell us that all the teams are booked on a train leaving at 7:22pm that night but they are going to try and look for an earlier train.  They find standing room only on a 4:15pm train.

-Denise & James Earl finally passed the rapping! Yay! (I could feel their pain... in my ears.)

-Reporters Joey & Kelsey are the next team to head to Rotterdam, they found a 4:53pm train travelling through Brussels to Rotterdam.

-Tanner & Josh, in true pretty boy fashion, say their train doesn't leave until 7:30pm so they decide to do some sightseeing in Paris... but can you really blame them, the Eiffel Tower is pretty iconic and amazing, how could you not want to take some time to look around?

-Team Chacattack and the Cheerleaders caught a 5:16pm train - Tiffany says they are, "Taking the train to Rotterdam, in Germany." (Uh oh.)  Rick & Cindy are not much better, they think that in France they call Amsterdam Rotterdam, that it's the same thing (just shaking my head.)

-Logan & Chris know they are going to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands and they show us a picture of a very red boat they have to find on one of the canals.  Chris slips and says they are going to Amsterdam but she jumps on that, "NOT Amsterdam." Yup, they know Rotterdam is it's own city.

-Team Texas is still sightseeing, they had some crepes but still think Tex-mex is better cuisine.

-Denise & James Earl finally get to the Pit Stop and Phil tells them the news is not good, first in the last leg, last here... but lucky for them, they are still racing and he hands them the next clue - they are too tired to jump up and down but once they realize they are still racing they grab the clue and take off running.

Rotterdam, Amsterdam
-Justin & Diana get to the city and head for the red lighthouse boat... when they run up they see a board with timed markers, they get the first time out of 5:00am the next day... and they know they will have at least an hour and a half lead over the last place team as the start times are staggered from 5 - 6:30am.

Paris - 7:22pm train
-Logan & Chris, Team Texas and Team Alabama are on the actually reserved train - Texas doesn't see any of the other teams and wonders if they screwed up by sightseeing... we shall see how that shakes out for them.

-The Reporters are changing trains in Brussels heading on to Rotterdam.

-The Cheerleaders are getting off their train in Rotterdam - while Chacattack is researching the red boat and don't bother getting off because they are going to Amsterdam (d'oh!)
-A guy that works on the train takes a look at the picture and says, "That's not Amsterdam, that's in Rotterdam, the previous stop." Scratch the needle across the records, "What? The Previous Stop?"
They get off at the next stop and are able to jump over onto another train to go back one stop... (smooth move doctors.)

Rotterdam
-The Cheerleaders get the second start time the next day 5:15am.
-Despite their screw up, Chacattack still gets the third time 5:30am.
-The Reporters are fourth with a 5:45am start the next day... and we see that the teams are sleeping on the boat that night, there are blow up mattresses on the deck for them, how cozy.
-Last three teams arrive and the Texas boys get 6:00am - they say no more sightseeing it's the race from now on.  Paparazzi get 6:15am and Denise & James Earl are still in last place with the 6:30am start time.

5:00am - Justin & Diana get the clue to take the water taxi to the windmill village and search for their next clue.  It also tells them to take as many steps as they can, "the more you take the higher the stakes." (Ooh.) They say their disagreements on the race haven't affected their racing because they communicate after each leg, what they did right and what they did wrong... blah, blah, blah, (sounds like bull-pucky to me.)  The first water taxi place they find doesn't open until 10am so they know that's not right.  They have a discussion about taking a cab or running to the water taxi terminal, Justin wants to take a cab but makes it her decision to run so he can keep throwing it in her face when they fall behind... and the bickering begins.

-The Cheerleaders left right behind them and ran to the water taxi terminal, and didn't get lost so they are now first.
-Chacattack and the Reporters take a taxi to the water taxi terminal.
-Chacattack gets there before Justin & Diana and he blames her for them now being in third place.  He blames her for making a stupid decision and she tells him to drop it so they can move on (I know, right?)
-Team Texas grabs a cab for the water taxi and they are still mad at themselves for touring around Paris and putting themselves in fifth place - but they are sure they can make up time today.

ROADBLOCK: Who wants to pick the sunflowers?
-One person from each team will have to run among the windmills to search for a perfect match for Van Gogh's Sunflowers painting... each painting was just a little different, the vase is behind the horizon line on some, a bud is missing on others... it's tricky and the windmills are pretty far apart, an eye for detail will save a lot of running.
-The Cheerleaders are the first team there and Krista is doing this one.  Chacattack gets there and Rick with his huge swollen lip is doing it (he got a mosquito bite the night before and his lip is huge.) Justin & Diana - she volunteers for this one (are you sure, if it takes you too long he's going to ream you out some more.)

-They look at the reference painting inside the windmill then take off running.  Diana counted the flowers and thinks she's found a match but when she runs it back to the judge, the vase was wrong (Argh!)
-Krista did the same thing.  They have to run the paintings all the way back, put it back where they got it, and keep looking for the right painting (so a physical and mental challenge this one.)
-Reporters show up and Joey is doing this one.
-Dr Rick is wrong on his first attempt, his choice is missing a blossom.
-Krista checked the painting again and her second choice was wrong too.
-Diana's second choice was also wrong and Justin was getting more and more frustrated, he started by telling her to take her time, no use being first if you have the wrong answer - but then he's grousing about how much time they are wasting there... (Good for her for even doing this one, with his attitude today, I'd make him do everything, see if he's as perfect as he thinks he is.)

-Joey proves to have the best eye for detail - he gets the perfect match on his first try.  The next clue tells them to use their heart rate from the last Roadblock (airplane in France) and then subtract their heart rate after this Roadblock - then taking the difference, gather that many tulips from the cart and deliver them to their next destination.
The difference for the Reporters is 19, they go to pick up the tulips.

-Team Texas gets to the Roadblock and Tanner is doing this one (his hamstring must be feeling better.)

-Dr. Rick gets a match on his second attempt and they have to pick up 21 tulips.

-Krista gets the right painting on her third attempt and screams obnoxiously, then yells, "Three years of college paid off Mom." (Really? I don't see what an education had to do with that challenge but sure, if that's what you got from it, good for you.)

-Diana is feeling crappy having lost their lead and Justin is no help since it's obvious he blames her as well.

-The Reporters deliver their tulips and get the clue to take their water taxi to the Ketel One vodka distillery to search for their next clue (wahoo!) Joey & Kelsey are just stoked to be ahead of Justin & Diana for the first time in the race.

-Chacattack deliver their tulips and Rick is so happy to have gotten out of there before the Green Team.  (And he still looks like Mushmouth.)

-Cheerleaders also deliver their tulips and head for the distillery.

-Tanner and Logan are realizing choosing the right painting is going to be difficult and Diana finally gets a match on her third attempt.
-Logan is wrong on her first attempt and Denise has also joined in looking for the sunflowers.
-Tanner gets it right on his third attempt - so Team Texas can take off.
-Denise gets her first choice wrong.

-Green Team delivers the tulips and heads for Nolet Distillery.
-Team Texas has the most trouble in getting the math right: 152-128= ... took them a long time to figure out 24.

-Joey & Kelsey get to the distillery and get the clue to the DETOUR - which disappointingly to me did not involve the vodka at all.
-SHIP - they must use a shipping navigation simulator to navigate their vessel through a storm and locate two specific ships in under 5 minutes.  If they can beat the clock, the captain will give them their next clue.
-DOUBLE-DUTCH - they must jump rope double-dutch style while simultaneously performing a clapping routine - if they can stay in step through the routine, the jump-judge will give them their next clue.
-The Reporters choose Ship.
-Team Chacattack also choose ship - but when they head out to look for the tram, Rick sees a bus stop and decides they would take the bus to the tram (huh?)

-Team Texas delivers their tulips and attempts to flirt with the tulip girl but it was clumsy and awkward, these two are losing their game.

-The Cheerleaders choose Skip - they know this will be right up their alley and they don't want to keep just following other teams, they think that's what messed them up in the beginning.

- Denise finally chooses the right picture and Logan gets it right just behind her so Team Alabama and Team Paparazzi do some math and go to get their tulips.

-Justin & Diana at the distillery choose the Ship detour.

-The Reporters are on the tram.
-Chacattack check the bus schedule and the next one is not due for 1/2 an hour, Cindy asks if the other guy at the bus stop can call them a taxi but Rick shoots down that idea, saying a taxi will take just as long to get there. (I know, why don't you go look for the tram?)

-Team Texas also chooses the Ship Detour.

SHIP
-The Reporters get to the Millennium Tower, that's where the simulator is, and they get some training - one of them will have to find the ships and direct the other person who will be piloting the ship... should be easy right? Nope.  There is definitely a learning curve to this one and the 5 minute time limit is a killer.

-Somehow, Justin & Diana are the next team to catch the tram.  The Cheerleaders and Team Texas get the next tram and Team Chacattack is still waiting for a bus.  Cindy is trying to tell Rick they need to go find the tram but he doesn't listen to her.  He even says he grew up in a traditional Asian household where the man made the decisions - and she goes along with that as well. (I would have just left him there, they need the tram not the bus, sheesh!)

-Justin & Diana get to the Detour and he says if there is another team there, the Green Team will be leaving first (ugh, he's so cocky.)

Ship
-Joey & Kelsey fail on their first attempt running out of time.  They go back for some more training and head back in for their second attempt but that also failed (though they got farther that time.) When they come out, they see Justin & Diana waiting for their turn and Joey is pissed, doesn't matter what they do, the Green Team sneaks in front every time.
-Justin & Diana start out the simulation strong but they run out of time on the rescue mission and he acts like it's her fault of course.

-Chacattack is still waiting at the bus stop, she's telling him they have lost their position, she's just hoping they are not last at this point.  He berates her about her negative attitude not helping the race and she says just sitting there is not helping the race either. (Exactly!)  They bicker some more before the bus finally shows up and she's just simmering, not even sitting with him anymore.)

Distillery - Paparazzi and Mom & Son both choose SHIP.

SKIP - The Cheerleaders learn the choreography or clapping routine quickly (it is very simple) and they just want to get this done.  They fail the first attempt only because Krista's legs are tired from the running in the sunflowers task but they rock it on the second attempt and are the first team to get the clue to the PIT STOP - they have to take the train to the Hague and check in at the Peace Palace.

SHIP - Joey & Kelsey are on their third attempt and they just miss it - Dang it!
-Justin & Diana come in behind them and make their second attempt, they head for the Pit Stop - of course this is devastating to the Reporters no matter what they do they can't get past the Green Team.  But they are successful in their next attempt and head for the "Ha-Goo? Must be the guy who runs the peaceful palace." (Really? And you guys are reporters, shouldn't they have some knowledge of foreign places?)

Bottom four teams are now all at SHIP.
-Team Texas, The Paparazzi, Team Alabama and Chacattack - he's still bugging her about sulking as they are now one of the last teams to arrive at the Millennium Tower (you were in 2nd place you doorknob, and she wants to win...)

-Looks like Team Texas paid no attention to their training session, their first attempt was embarrassing, they had no idea what they were doing (you can't fake it, dumbass.)
-Chacattack fails quickly because he second guesses her directions as the navigator (really, not learning a thing are you?)
-Paparazzi fails quickly which is not surprising because these two are definitely not rocket surgeons.
-Team Alabama also fails their first attempt - I think this is a just keep trying kind of task, you get a little better each time.

-Justin & Diana are the first team to the train station and make the train out that the Cheerleaders just missed.  Man!
-Team Texas finished their simulation and take off for the Pit Stop.
-Team Paparazzi also completes their mission, shockingly. Heads for the Pit Stop.
-Team Alabama is in the simulator leaving Chacattack as the last team waiting their turn in the hallway and Rick is trying to bolster Cindy's spirits saying there is still lots of race left... but there really isn't.

-Denise & James Earl pass their mission and get the clue to the Pit Stop making Rick & Cindy officially in last place.

-At the train station, it's Mom & Son and Chacattack waiting for the train.  Cindy & Rick take a risk and take the train leaving sooner even though it makes two stops.  Denise & James Earl agonize about it but end up waiting the seven minutes for the direct train.  It was a make or break decision... then their train is delayed 10 minutes. (Argh!)
-Chacattack gets off their train and jumps the tram to the Peace Palace... but they don't see their stop coming up, they ask someone if this tram is going to the Peace Palace and figure out they are on the wrong tram (wow, transportation has been the downfall of Chacattack in Europe.)

 Here's How They Finished:
1) Justin & Diana - This is their fourth first place finish and Phil tells them the reason they had to keep track of their steps this leg is because FitBit is turning their combined steps into dollars - they won over $31K which will go towards their wedding.  They also got a massage for the length of time of their highest heart rate - 89 minutes.
2) Kelsey & Joey - they are hoping to knock Justin & Diana down a peg, Joey is tired of losing.
3) Krista & Tiffany - Krista is disappointed to have lost their foot race to the mat, but third place is a huge improvement for this team.
4) Tanner & Josh - at least they know they're in the Netherlands.
5) Logan & Chris - I'm honestly surprised this team is still around.
6) Denise & James Earl - they figured they were the last team to arrive but Phil stops them and lets them know they are still in the Race.
7) Cindy & Rick (Team Chacattack) - they see Denise & James Earl standing at the mat so they know it's coming, ***ELIMINATED***
-Cindy says now that they are finished with the Race they can start the next chapter, having a family.

And with Chacattack leaving, that takes Pat T., Lee B., Monica S., Ian G., and Robert L. out of the pool.

Next episode - there is some light coal mining, pushing a piano through the streets of Krakow and Chris & Logan fighting (just another day on the Race.)

Hopefully better late than never :)
