Survivor Second Chance - Sept 30/15 Episode Recap

Survivor MacGyver

Last week Survivor Second Chance started and it quickly proved to be Old School vs New School among the returning players - and it was the end of my game when Vytas was the first person voted out (boo for me, but I couldn't blame them, he was so sketchy.)

Ta Keo - Day 4
-This is the tribe that lost one of their members the night before and they know that Jeff Varner sided with the New School players, leaving Kelly Wiglesworth, Terry Deitz, and Woo kind of on the bottom.  Kelly's not very happy to be in that position already (at least buy her dinner first.)  Her alliance needs to get their butts in gear - Spencer & Shirin set the pace and if they don't start defending themselves, they'll be out of there.

-Meanwhile, New Kelley got herself a hidden idol at the challenge yesterday and she hasn't had a minute to herself to even unwrap the thing - she says she's going for wood and she/we get the first glimpse of her hidden idol, it's actually quite pretty, carved flowered cross with a blue tassel.  Kelley is just so excited to have this little bit of insurance, she wants to do everything she didn't get a chance to do the first time she played. She buries it, nowhere remarkable (I hope she'll remember where it is.)

-Once back at camp, Varner is talking to Spencer, Shirin and new Kelley - he wants to talk about who they are voting for next and they agree it should be one of the three (Terry, Kelly or Woo)... Varner says he hopes his voting with them proved he had some loyalty... but then he tells the camera his strategy in voting out Vytas was to wake up the Old Schoolers, get them playing this game, and hopefully set up getting rid of Shirin and Spencer because they are playing this game way too hard and they are already too cocky.

-Varner goes from that meeting to talking to Terry Dietz, he tells him that he didn't think it was time for Abi to go last night because Abi is easy, it can't just be a casual name in passing, that's too old school - this game is moving like lightening and all these threats have got to go.  Varner says if he is going to the end he wants it to be with y'all [the old schoolers] but you've got to wake up.  Terry hears him and says he wants to take out Spencer, and Jeff adds, or Shirin, they are
the engine running things at this point... then Jeff spins around, "I'm looking for a spy shack." (Ha, I'm loving me some Varner so far.)

Bayon - Day 4
-Joe decides to make some hammocks out of the fishing nets (I guess that's what he used) he had enough for four hammocks and they did not suck for those people using them.  Joe said last time he played he was the biggest threat no questions asked (uh... I wouldn't go that far) but this time he wants to be someone who provides a service, someone they want to have around.
-Steven is amazed by Joe, "he's Survivor MacGyver" always building things, going fishing... he's too much of a golden boy, beautiful threat.  Stephen says [Joes]'s great to have at the beginning, he'll provide food, build the shelter, win challenges... and then you slit his neck (as they show Stephen trying to open a coconut... he's not slitting anything - hahaha.)

Ta Keo - Day 4
Oh... Look at the monkey!  They have cute little golden monkeys that squeak in Cambodia... ugh, and deer that scream... not so cute.

-Spencer tries to reach out to Abi after she got four votes the night before, she says she's doing fine... but she tells the camera she's trying not to freak out like she would have when she played before, she's trying to be the Abi she wants to be...(yeah, she's a psychopath - she doesn't have real emotions, she's trying to project what people expect - I'd be afraid.)  And Spencer's no dummy, he knows Abi is a total drama queen, totally unpredictable.  The fact that he has to trust his game to someone like that is the scariest thing he's had to do out there.
-Spencer and Abi go over to talk to PG and he asks her how they made a fire chimney in China... while she starts to explain it, Abi, out of nowhere, asks her, "What's going on PG?" and PG was taken aback, "Uh, we're going to build a fire chimney... what are you talking about?"  Abi says she's just trying to further this friendship they have going... (what friendship? Yeah, she's going to kill you all in your sleep.)

-Varner, Woo and Terry are sharing a piece of fruit by the water and Abi says to Spencer, "Should I go down there and make them change their conversation?"  He urges her to do it... probably just to make her go away - but Spencer tells the camera that Abi is just there to start fights which is a cancer to a tribe (Oh, the cancer, I've always liked that trope) and definitely a cancer for an alliance.
-Varner sees her coming and they offered her some fruit but no, she just wants to be part of the talk - Varner tells the camera that Abi is their own little Brazilian Soap Opera and there are buttons they can push for varying levels of entertainment.  She says she wants to know what they were talking about and Terry just tells her there is stuff that she doesn't need to hear (he's having none of her shenanigans.)  Varner sees her as someone that everyone hates and therefore, someone he can beat - a tool he can use to win a million dollars. "This is delicious.  Who needs food when you have Abi."

Bayon - Day 5
-Andrew Savage is humble bragging about his perfect life and perfect wife and he gets choked up... (ugh, I'm sure he's genuine but it's day 5 and you're already crying about missing your wife... his beautiful, South African, model wife... give me a break.)  But he has all the women eating out of his hand - Even Kass is touched by his lovely story, saying last time the people she played with were horrible, some of these people are great and they make her a better person and player.
-Jeremy was also touched by Savage's story and true emotion about his wife but he had to take off on his own, he's trying to be all business out there, he doesn't want emotion about his wife to intrude.  He reveals to us that his wife is currently pregnant and he just wants to be there to see her stomach grow... but he's not telling anyone there about it, he knows he's a physical threat, and to add expectant father, no one will want to take him to the end. (Wow, he's going to try to control every last thing he can, that will make him burn out in this game.)

-Back at camp everyone starts to notice that Jeremy is gone and Stephen wonders if he's looking for an idol - Andrew notices that reaction, instead of thinking maybe Jeremy, who has a wife and kids, was affected by Andrew's amazing story, he's playing the game 24/7 with no emotion.  Andrew goes and tells Jeremy, to solidify that Fishbach is lacking all the things that mean anything to him; morals, values, loyalty, courage (because he didn't cry about your profound love for the most beautiful woman in the world? Give me a break.) But if Andrew has his way, Stephen's time out there is limited.

Ta Keo - Night 5
Shirin is talking to PG about Abi - how dealing with that level of crazy is so draining and PG jumps right on board loudly talking smack about Abi who, of course, over hears everything and comes over to confront them... well mostly PG because Shirin slunk away when the fireworks started.  Abi & PG finally have it out with PG saying Abi can't blame her for talking behind her back when Abi was the one bad mouthing her to everyone about the bracelet - Abi denies that she was bad mouthing her (I honestly think she doesn't realize that was what she was doing, in her mind she was giving her the benefit of the doubt by not screaming directly at her)... how can you really reason with someone who doesn't understand normal human interaction?
-They agree they got off on the wrong foot - but they are not going to be friends and PG goes back to the shelter to laugh with everyone about Abi.  Abi goes down to the beach to cry by herself, "I feel so alone." The scary thing she said was that she wanted to work with Shirin because she was so alone in her season, but she didn't have her back at all... Oh boy, sleep with one eye open.

-Terry couldn't stomach what he was seeing, yes, Abi is annoying, but for her people to be laughing at her while she's left floundering - that's just wrong. He goes to talk to her on the beach and they make a strategic connection. Almost despite himself, Terry's got his social game going.  Abi feels like Shirin especially doesn't have her back, he says Shirin and Spencer are out for themselves and if they go forward the old school way, he'll have her back. (Varner would be so proud.)

Ta Keo - Day 6
-Very early in the morning, Abi goes and talks to Varner on the beach and he asks if she had a good talk with Terry the night before - yes.  Jeff says Terry is such a nice man, he's thinking of aligning with him - she is too.  Jeff tells her he doesn't want her to go anywhere, he thinks she's fabulous - her little moments turn him on.  This is music to her ears!  She feels so good that someone actually wants to work with her and finds her... a joy. (Varner is just reeling her in, he's playing hard, but still being likable, that's a hard balance to strike.) And Abi is all in with Varner, Terry, Wiglesworth and Woo to vote out Spencer or Shirin at the next vote.  They'll be sorry.

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE
Bayan is pretty surprised to see it was Vytas voted out at the first tribal council.

The challenge - they will race across a series of A-frames while carrying coils or rope, they must use that rope to drag a heavy crate over a peaked track to the finish.  Two tribe members will then use the pieces inside the crate to solve a puzzle by putting the slats in a frame to complete a picture.  First tribe to finish wins immunity and reward of: a Survivor tool kit - hammer, axe, chisel, saw, bamboo nails and they'll have materials back at camp to improve their shelter.

Bayon chooses to sit Ciera for this challenge.

-Off they go - and they didn't mention that each A-frame gets higher as they go - most people could do the first one on their own but the next they needed some help - and they can't move on until everyone is over ... so the tribes are pretty much neck and neck through this section.  Though there were some pretty good falls, and some skin left on the course.
-They start pulling their crate along the course and here is where Bayon takes the lead.  Kimmy & Kass are working the puzzle pretty quickly but this is a hard one and pieces have to be shifted.  PG & New Kelley start on the puzzle for Ta Keo but Spencer taps in... then Shirin (she's horrible at puzzles, and she quickly starts freaking out when a piece gets stuck).  Joe and Jeremy tap in for Bayon, having studied the picture, they have an idea what needs to be done.  Spencer seems to have it figured out... and pieces are flying for both tribes... Ta Keo thinks they have it... but both figures are pointing the same way, they need to be opposite - Bayon thinks they have it... and they are right!  BAYON wins immunity again!
(Oh, there is Spencer's pissy face...)
-Varner says Spencer and Shirin had their fate in their own hands and they lost it... how poetic.

Ta Keo - Day 6
-They return to camp and Spencer is telling the camera he's so thankful to be in control of this game with Shirin.  His old Survivor experience of being on the bottom and suffering is gone, he is so glad to have someone he can actually play with. (Wow, way too early to be that cocky, especially when you're losing.)
-Varner is all about getting rid of the threats and he sees Spencer as a huge strategic threat, he's one of the smartest young men he's met, and then Shirin is all of that and she's emotional, she can talk to you like you're best friends, she's a salesperson.  He says they are two heads on one snake (ooh, another Survivor staple, the snake) it doesn't matter which one they chop off.
-Varner proposes voting Shirin or Spencer to Wiglesworth and PG - they're in - PG, would like to vote out Abi-Maria, but she'll go where the majority of the votes are, which seems to be everyone against Shirin & Spencer.

-Varner then goes and talks to New Kelley and she knows that the tribe is a mess and he tells her that Abi is totally loyal to Terry after Shirin didn't stand up for her last night and they are talking voting out Shirin so she better not go running and telling them.  Kelley says she won't - and tells the camera she's not really happy that things have shifted overnight and she has to go with the flow against her initial alliance.

-And... it's going to be Abi who screws everything up - we see Abi and Shirin walking (Oh no.)  Shirin is telling the camera she feels really good going forward, she's got everyone with her but she wants to check on Abi because she's been so all over the place... (why did Varner let this happen?  You have to watch Abi 24/7)  And here we go, Shirin tells Abi she's very sorry she didn't stand up for her last night and Abi says she's sorry too - who came to her when she needed it - Terry - Terry did.  Shirin says she's still loyal, what more does she want.  Kelley's on board, Varner's on board... and Abi says, "They want to vote you and Spencer out." (Oh Sweet JEBUS!)  Shirin asks, kind of shocked, "Are we still in this together?" And Abi laughs at her, "Not my style."  (Oh my Godipus! She's a menace.)

-So now Shirin is running to Spencer to tell him they're screwed - Abi and Varner are voting with Old School.  Spencer is now in self preservation mode, just tying to make it three more days.
-First stop for Shirin and Spencer is Woo, and she, with tears in her eyes, is trying to lay out how his alliance will vote him out when they get to the merge because he's too much of a threat.  Woo is no dummy - he tells her point blank, this is the first time they've even deigned to talk to him and they are asking for a vote? "Absolutely not." (Exactly.)
-Spencer can't believe his second chance is turning out exactly like his first one did - (it appears Spencer and Shirin are too smart for their own good - maybe actually getting to know people before trying to manipulate the game on day one would serve you better.) But he's all choked up too - he and Shirin were enjoying playing together and it looks like they may have to vote for each other in order to try and save their own skins.

TRIBAL COUNCIL
-Varner says the vibe of the tribe is exhausted - today really sucked a lot out of them, it was a rough challenge.
-Spencer says they start playing with some kind of amnesia about how hard it is until they are out there again and realize it's going to kick your @ss. (Whatever, get to the good stuff.)
-Shirin doesn't remember the first time being awesome, she had a really rough time the first time around and she's starting to have a rough time again the second time around.
Jeff, already? Tell me about that (he's trying to Barbara Walters her.)
-Shirin - yeah, already - there was some fighting and some people lost  some trust in me and I think I'm on the bottom so I hope I can fight my way back into the game. (Ugh, so vague, I guess it's too soon for her to want to mix it up.)
-Jeff asks New Kelley what she's talking about and she tells him there was a disagreement between Abi and PG - that's what she's talking about.
-Jeff asks Abi what happened - she says she overheard Shirin and PG talking about her and she felt betrayed because they were in an alliance.  She feels very gracious towards Terry, he was the only one who rescued her when she was feeling very lonely and thought she would be voted out unanimously.
-Jeff points out to Shirin that what Abi just said about Terry was almost verbatim what Shirin said about Mike in her season.
-She says she realizes that, she should have been there for her and gone to her right away to fix it.  She didn't... and the game changes very quickly. (You were basking in the glow of being with the in crowd and it bit you in the butt.)
-Terry agrees, he and Abi just made a connection, it wasn't hardcore strategy, it was just about building a relationship and a lot of good things came of it - to the point where he doesn't think he's on the bottom anymore.
-Spencer -agrees that Shirin, and himself, are on the bottom - mostly because of talking too much strategy and not getting to know all these people.
-Varner confirms that they have narrowed it down to Shirin or Spencer going tonight.  Spencer knows, and he makes his little speech, naming off each person by name, he says if he is there tomorrow, he's going to focus on building relationships and getting to know them instead of trying to strategize and make alliances.
-Jeff points out that Spencer and Shirin seem to be having the same problems they had in their first time around, and he asks Shirin what she thinks about that?
-Shirin says change is hard and it doesn't happen overnight.  She knows if she goes home tonight, that's on her, she did that.  But if she gets to stay, that'll be her third chance and that's once in a lifetime. (Really? I say b'bye.)

Time to Vote:
Shirin voted for Spencer
Spencer voted for Shirin - he knows she wrote his name down too and doesn't have a bad thing to say about her.

Tallying the Votes:
No one plays a hidden immunity idol.
Votes:
Spencer - 1
Shirin - 1
Shirin - 2, 3
Spencer - 2, 3... 4
Shirin - 4... one vote left...
And it's SHIRIN voted out - she tells Spencer to "give 'em hell."
Spencer says he meant everything he said, "thank you guys" (we'll see.)

Next week:  Jeff tells them to drop their buffs, they are switching from two tribes to three tribes (WHAT? Come on! That seemed to be the consensus.)

Shirin - didn't feel like she got to seize her second chance.  She struggled to change this time around - she had an awesome opening act but then blew up her own game.

And... with Shirin leaving, that takes Cara & Alex L., Krista H., and Kevin T. out of the pool. (Sorry Kevin, your first time playing and you're out of both pools already, ouch.)

Have a great rest of the week everyone,

Coleen
