Fruits of Our Labor
Last week the teams raced to Amsterdam where Laura & Tyler got their second first place finish in a row and Matt & Ashley were saved by a non-elimination leg.
This episode opened recapping Hayley & Blair's constant communication issues - he says he's going to work on listening to her and she's going to work on not freaking out - to which she interjects, "I do not freak out." (Really lady? I mean really?)
Laura & Tyler are the first to depart at 12:40am - they get really excited when they read they are heading to Peru.
Phil tells us the teams must now fly a 1/3 of the way around the world to Trujillo, Peru. Once they land they must take a taxi to the Plaza De Armas and join the fireworks festivities. The clue also tells them to monitor their FitBit charge, they may require the information (hmm.)
-It's Laura's thirtieth birthday and they hope that birthday luck plays in their favour this leg.
-Blair & Ashley are the next team out at 1:07am, he reads that reservations have been made for them (so everyone will be on the same flight.) They are still telling the camera that they are having a good time - 90% of their days are fun and Blair says 10% are hell... (apparently they are only showing us the 10%.)
-Laura & Tyler take the itinerary the travel agent gives them so they will be landing at 9:25am the next day - and when they leave the travel agent they are glad the reservations were done for them so they don't have to worry about it... however, Blair & Hayley asked if there was an earlier flight and the travel agent got them on a flight arriving at 10:40pm the night before the reserved flight (uh oh, I guess birthday luck is not with Tyler & Laura this leg.)
-Jelani & Jenny - 1:20am - they head to the travel agency and are already planning to ask about better flights.
-Mike & Rochelle - 1:30am - Mike thinks having a pre-existing relationship has helped them deal with the stress of the race better than the new couples and it's proven for them that they can deal with anything together. (Aw)
-Tyler & Laura are heading to a bar to celebrate Laura's birthday since they have time to kill before their flight - they didn't invite the Bickersons (Blair & Hayley) because who wants that negative energy around on their birthday?... not Laura.
-Jenny & Jelani get to the travel agency while Blair & Hayley are still there and when they ask about better flights Hayley tells them that Tyler & Laura did not change from the original reservation - the travel agent further confirms that there are not many seats left on the earlier flight and Hayley is beside herself she's so excited.
-Laura & Tyler are now having shots with the bartender... ho boy, they're going to be feeling no pain until they find out they got screwed in the flight department.
-Matt & Ashley are the last team at 2:27am - and they assume everyone is on the same flight (like I did)... so only the doctor/nurse and lawyers got the better flight - but how much do you want to bet the next challenge doesn't start until the next day...
-Laura & Tyler spill out of the taxi at the airport and have just read in the clue that they could have booked a more advantageous flight if they found one and they're bummed they didn't read the whole clue before they went out drinking.
-Mike & Rochelle know they are significantly behind the first two teams but they are still with two other teams so all hope is not lost.
TRUJILLO, PERU
-First flight lands the firs two teams take taxis to the Plaza - Jenny & Jelani are handed 7:00am and they get to set off some fireworks. Blair & Hayley are right behind them.
7:00am - the teams return to the Plaza De Armas and get a clue from the Master of Arms - the clue tells them to find a shine in the morning sun (shoe shine stand) at the Plazuela de la Merced.
-Blair speaks Spanish and asks a cab driver for directions, of course the cab driver tells him it's a in a bad neighbourhood and it's dangerous to walk there so both teams get into the cabs... but the drivers have no idea where they need to go... so everyone pulls over - Jenny & Jelani get taken back to where they were, thinking it must have been within walking distance and Hayley wants them to do the same but Blair insists he's got it and she insists he doesn't because they are just standing there wasting time while the cab drivers talk to each other... (It's true he never listens to her, she needs to take the lead and not wait for him to listen, he'll have no choice if she hails a cab and gets in... instead she keeps nattering at him and he tunes her out.)
-Jenny & Jelani find the shoe shine stand and get the clue to travel by taxi towards Santo Domingo, then Fundo San Fernando then Cuartel No 1 and look for their next clue. They also notice that Matt & Ashley's Speed Bump is there.
2ND FLIGHT
-The three teams hit the ground running for taxis.
-Hayley is livid when she finally gets Blair to go back and they find the shoe shine stand right away - it's a constant barrage of how she can't even look at him, he never listens to her, she's so mad she doesn't even want to work as a team with him... on and on and on... (Stop beating that poor dead horse - is it any surprise he doesn't listen to you? She's a broken record.)
- Mike & Rochelle get to the Plaza De Armas just ahead of Tyler & Laura and Matt & Ashley are last again. They look for the shine in the morning sun.
-Jenny & Jelani have taken their taxi out to a farm in the middle of nowhere and find the clue to the ROADBLOCK - Who wants to take charge in the field? Scruffy Phil tells us that will have to work with a professional cutter and harvest sugar cane (oof.) (The Roadblock tagline is Gimme Some Sugar :)) When they finish the dirty, backbreaking work of cutting down the section of sugar cane, the crew boss will hand them their next clue and a bundle of cane.
-Jenny said she's going to do this one and they also got the Date Night in their clue.
-Jelani is telling the camera she can do it, she's hella strong... but then we see Jenny trying to wield the machete and... I think they're going to be there for a long time (they want them to cut down a long row of cane - yikes.)
-Laura & Tyler find the Speed bump where there are llamas but can't find the clue - they run right past the shoe shine stand even though the local guys were waving at them... then they ask someone where they need to go and are told it's far (Uh oh) and they tell Matt & Ashley - so those two teams jump in cabs.
-Mike & Rochelle head to the shoe shine stand and ask... they get the clue and run away so the other teams don't see them.
-In the cab Tyler is saying at least they know where the Detour is (assuming that's what the llamas were) and Laura says she knows where the Speed Bump is because she saw the sign... he knows the Speed Bump sign is always where the clue box is - STOP THE CAB! They get out. Matt & Ashley also figure out they needed to be where they just were and get out of the cab.
-Blair & Hayley get to the farm and she says she wants to take charge in the field (really? I'm so confused why the girls are saying they want to do this one. What do they think taking charge in a cane field would entail?) Blair's just hoping she gets out her anger on the sugar cane instead of him.
-It seems to be working, as Hayley is telling us the whole time she's cutting the cane. Seeing her with a machete in her hand makes Blair nervous, he's keeping his distance so she doesn't mistake his head for some sugar cane.
-Tyler & Laura get the clue from the shoe shine stand and Matt & Ashley find their Speed Bump - they have to type out a loan application for a llama on an old school type-writer. Ashley has to show Matt how to do everything because as usual he freaks out instead taking a minute to figure it out on his own. (It's just a typewriter, hit the keys... he doesn't know how to hit the return, sigh - I'm feeling really old.)
-Back in the cane field Jenny & Hayley are gettin' it done (you go girls!) Jenny gets the clue and bundle of cane - they now must head up into the Andes about 10,000ft above sea level and find Parque Ramon Castilla (covered soccer field) and deliver their cane at the stadium to get their next clue.
-They also have to write down their FitBit steps and calories before they get back in their taxi.
-Hayley & Blair are right behind them, and you better believe he had to carry the bundle of sugar cane.
-Speed Bump - done - that was pretty simple - Matt & Ashley head for the farm.
-Mike & Rochelle get to the Roadblock and Mike is doing this one - Laura & Tyler get there too and Tyler is going to be cutting (see that makes more sense to me.)
-Tyler and Mike are cutting way faster than the girls did but Tyler is in better shape and Mike just can't keep up.
Parque Ramon Castillo - Jelani & Jenny are the first to the stadium and they deliver the sugar cane to the vendor outside.
-Using the data collected from their FitBit, they have to divide their number of steps by their calories to find out how many steps they'd have to run to work off the 576 calories in the cup of sugar cane juice, pressed from the cane they just delivered. (No one said there would be Math!) Once the numbers compute, they will have to drink the juice to get their next clue.
-Jenny & Jelani get to computing... hold on, they gave them a calculator (well, that should be easy).
-Blair & Hayley get there and she's so excited to see it's Math (what is wrong with that girl? Not that girls can't like math, I enjoy the fact that there is only one correct answer but running a race all hopped up on adrenaline is never a good state to be doing math for me.)
-Tyler made quick work of the sugar cane and Mike to his credit was right behind him - the workers in the field even gave them a round of applause - they took down their FitBit numbers and are heading out just as Matt & Ashley get there. Tyler & Laura agree that Matt & Ashley are toast. At least Matt was doing this one, and we know he's got manic energy... but he's got a lot of time to make up.
-Jenny & Jelani get their math problems right and actually fight over the delicious sugar cane juice that they get to drink together. They then get the clue to the DETOUR: Mamas or Papas.
-In Mamas - they have to search for the ingredients for Peruvian moonshine brewed by Mama Macha searching the vendors in the town - once they deliver all the ingredients correctly, Mama Macha will offer them a drink and their next clue (what's up with the drinking on this leg?)
-In Papas - teams must sort an enormous pile of potatoes into the different types then take them by Moto-taxi to a marked stand in the village where they must place each variety of potato (or papas) into its own bin - once they've correctly sorted all the potatoes, the vendor will hand them their next clue. (hmm, what's the catch on that one?)
-Jenny & Jelani choose Papas.
-Blair & Hayley are doing Mamas.
-Matt made up some time by cutting like a mad man - they write down their FitBit info, grab the sugar cane and take off.
-Papas - Jenny & Jelani get to sorting their pile of spuds.
-Mamas - Blair & Hayley get to the market area and find the shop to get the list of ingredients - Blair speaking Spanish helps as they pick up three ingredient at that first shop and head to the next. Hayley acknowledges his Spanish skills are a great advantage for them this leg (oh, nice words, the machete workout did help.)
-Jenny & Jelani heading back with the sorted spuds.
-Blair & Hayley have 6 of 9 ingredients.
-Laura & Tyler and Mike & Rochelle have arrived at the math problem and they're all working through it.
-Jenny & Jelani dump out their potato sacks into the four different bins and the vendor lady finds one that was mis-sorted and releases the end of the bins so all the potatoes tumble to the ground (WHAT!?) to be sorted again but now in the middle of the crowded market (Oh man! That's kind of mean.)
-Blair & Hayley get to Mama's place with all her ingredients - and it's Perfecto! She gives them some of the moonshine which they said was like a spicy, cidery drink with a kick - they both really enjoyed it - and then they got the clue to the PIT STOP: Virgen De La Puerta (they have to make their way on foot.)
-Tyler & Laura have figured out the math problem and drank the juice - they choose the Mamas Detour and head out.
-Mike & Rochelle choose Mamas and are right behind them.
-Matt & Ashley are hoping someone struggles in the Detour and gives them the chance to catch up.
-Back in the market, Jenny & Jelani are finished sorting their potatoes off the ground into the bins and they get the thumbs up this time - and the clue to the Pit Stop.
-Tyler & Laura are looking for the store to get the list of Mamas ingredients when they realize the mototaxi took them to the Papas task - she wants to head back but he says let's just do it. They start shoving the pile of potatoes into bags with no sorting... um, maybe read the clue, d'think?
-Mike & Rochelle actually get to the Mamas task and pick up their shopping list plus the first three ingredients.
-Matt & Ashley are working on the math problem.
-Tyler & Laura shlump the sacks of potatoes back to the moto-taxi and head to the market.
-Mike & Rochelle are asking the locals to direct them to the stores on the list and everyone was very helpful, they were able to bust it out rather quickly - being nice and treating people well is a strength they found helped them out on this Detour.
-Matt & Ashley calculated the steps and head for the Mamas.
-Tyler & Laura get to the potato vendor and they are sorting the potatoes into the bins. The vendor happens to be right outside the shop where the Mamas task begins. Matt & Ashley show up and as usual are ugly Americans just yelling "Mamas? Shopping List?" like people are going to understand them. Tyler tells them he thinks the guy took them to the potato one and right away they freak out and run back to their taxi guy and yell at him that it's the wrong one, he insists it's there but they don't know what to do there so they get back in the moto-taxi and he's going to take them... where?
-Mike & Rochelle are finding the elevation to be an issue trying to run up the hill to Mamas but they enjoy the potent drink and get the clue to the Pit Stop.
-Matt & Ashley get to the Papas farm and can't believe he took them there (OMG you guys, you were at the right one before, you just can't figure anything out on your own it seems...) Anyway, they decide to sort the potatoes there (which is way easier than Tyler & Laura's method).
-Speaking of... Laura & Tyler had been using water to wash off the potatoes to better identify them and when they run out they start spitting on the potatoes (are you serious?) When they ask the vendor lady if their sort is right, she lets them all go on the ground (kind of serves them right, that was really gross.)
-They re-sort and get the nod from the lady but she doesn't want to high 5 them - (you spit on her product and ruined her day I'm sure.) But they got the clue to the Pit Stop non-the-less.
-Matt & Ashley get to the Papas vendor and start putting their potatoes in the bins. They must have had some wrong cause they get dumped. Matt, "Why'd she do that?" Ashley, "So we do it again?" (Quite the grasp of the obvious these two.)
Here's How They Finished:
1) Hayley & Blair - they won a Fit Bit Fit Kit - home workout equipment or a gym membership, and a bunch of Fit Bit stuff. Phil says they look so close and yet... Hayley says they are BFFs (uh) Blair agrees they completely respect each other, he sometimes just wishes she'd shut-up and she sometimes wishes he'd pay attention and listen - But COMPLETE respect.
2) Jenny & Jelani - Phil asks if they were disappointed that they didn't make a love match and they say this is better, they'll be friends for a long time. (Sure.)
3) Mike & Rochelle - Yeah! I'm rooting for these underdogs.
4) Laura & Tyler - Phil, "You'd probably like to keep on racing... luckily you can because you're team #4." (way to toy with their emotions Phil.)
5) Matt & Ashley - ELIMINATED - They are so proud of each other and sad to go. It was an amazing experience and it showed them they are better together, they can do anything.
With Matt & Ashley leaving, that takes Ian G., Laura W., Alexis G., Rachel R. and Lynne B. out of the race.
-Next week it's a Race for a spot in the finale, every mistake, every decision will make a difference... looks like some manual labour moving bricks and a water challenge... can't wait!

-Tyler & Laura are looking for the store to get the list of Mamas ingredients when they realize the mototaxi took them to the Papas task - she wants to head back but he says let's just do it. They start shoving the pile of potatoes into bags with no sorting... um, maybe read the clue, d'think?
-Mike & Rochelle actually get to the Mamas task and pick up their shopping list plus the first three ingredients.
-Matt & Ashley are working on the math problem.
-Tyler & Laura shlump the sacks of potatoes back to the moto-taxi and head to the market.
-Mike & Rochelle are asking the locals to direct them to the stores on the list and everyone was very helpful, they were able to bust it out rather quickly - being nice and treating people well is a strength they found helped them out on this Detour.
-Matt & Ashley calculated the steps and head for the Mamas.
-Tyler & Laura get to the potato vendor and they are sorting the potatoes into the bins. The vendor happens to be right outside the shop where the Mamas task begins. Matt & Ashley show up and as usual are ugly Americans just yelling "Mamas? Shopping List?" like people are going to understand them. Tyler tells them he thinks the guy took them to the potato one and right away they freak out and run back to their taxi guy and yell at him that it's the wrong one, he insists it's there but they don't know what to do there so they get back in the moto-taxi and he's going to take them... where?
-Mike & Rochelle are finding the elevation to be an issue trying to run up the hill to Mamas but they enjoy the potent drink and get the clue to the Pit Stop.
-Matt & Ashley get to the Papas farm and can't believe he took them there (OMG you guys, you were at the right one before, you just can't figure anything out on your own it seems...) Anyway, they decide to sort the potatoes there (which is way easier than Tyler & Laura's method).
-Speaking of... Laura & Tyler had been using water to wash off the potatoes to better identify them and when they run out they start spitting on the potatoes (are you serious?) When they ask the vendor lady if their sort is right, she lets them all go on the ground (kind of serves them right, that was really gross.)
-They re-sort and get the nod from the lady but she doesn't want to high 5 them - (you spit on her product and ruined her day I'm sure.) But they got the clue to the Pit Stop non-the-less.
-Matt & Ashley get to the Papas vendor and start putting their potatoes in the bins. They must have had some wrong cause they get dumped. Matt, "Why'd she do that?" Ashley, "So we do it again?" (Quite the grasp of the obvious these two.)
Here's How They Finished:
1) Hayley & Blair - they won a Fit Bit Fit Kit - home workout equipment or a gym membership, and a bunch of Fit Bit stuff. Phil says they look so close and yet... Hayley says they are BFFs (uh) Blair agrees they completely respect each other, he sometimes just wishes she'd shut-up and she sometimes wishes he'd pay attention and listen - But COMPLETE respect.
2) Jenny & Jelani - Phil asks if they were disappointed that they didn't make a love match and they say this is better, they'll be friends for a long time. (Sure.)
3) Mike & Rochelle - Yeah! I'm rooting for these underdogs.
4) Laura & Tyler - Phil, "You'd probably like to keep on racing... luckily you can because you're team #4." (way to toy with their emotions Phil.)
5) Matt & Ashley - ELIMINATED - They are so proud of each other and sad to go. It was an amazing experience and it showed them they are better together, they can do anything.
With Matt & Ashley leaving, that takes Ian G., Laura W., Alexis G., Rachel R. and Lynne B. out of the race.
-Next week it's a Race for a spot in the finale, every mistake, every decision will make a difference... looks like some manual labour moving bricks and a water challenge... can't wait!
