I've Got the Smartest Dude
I know, another episode already? On Wednesday, the oldest couple, Jeff & Lyda were eliminated by Jeff's inability to dance. On Friday, we had another all new episode which saw the now 10 couples remaining in Japan and racing for a million dollars.
-Jelani & Jenny were the first team out at 5:30am after spending the night in a cubicle sized room - they read the clue to travel by bullet train to Nagano, Japan (which hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics) once there, they must find the castle and their next clue.
-The Legal Team is working well together, she's all about the details and he's pretty laissez faire, keeping it positive so it works.
-Next team is Jeff & Jackie, 5:33am - he thinks he has the best all round date, she's a pretty showgirl and she's super competitive so he's not ruling out a love match at this point.
-5:45am, it's Tyler & Laura and these two are a pretty couple - her tune seems to have changed from the super flirty girl from the first episode to down to business - she's concentrating on the race, and we'll see what happens (or that's what she's telling us anyway.)
-6:14am, Olympians Aly & Steven, they're excited to be heading to the former Olympic city.
-6:52am - Jonathan & Hayley, NKOTB were supposed to play Japan last year but they cancelled and went to Vegas instead... but Jonathan's happy to be there now.
-7:10am - Bergen & Kurt... Bergen says he wouldn't normally date someone that looks like him (HA! At least I'm not the only one who sees it) but maybe that's what he's supposed to look for (I doubt it.) Kurt says he came into this focused on the blind date because he's never had a relationship before (and I don't think they're into each other - at - all.) He says for now they're friends.
-7:15am - Mike & Rochelle (I love their hashtag #TruckStopLove), and she just tells us again this is a FF for their relationship, maybe she'll let him meet her son after this?
-7:33am - Blair & Hayley - the Doctor and Nurse, she seems really annoying and he's polite. He's hoping once they start climbing up the ranks the interpersonal relationship will develop more (so she better pick it up if she wants a chance... I think they're doomed.)
-7:36am - Hairstylists over-confident Matt & Ashley - he has no idea what a bullet train is...huh? They think the blind date couples are a threat because they are holding back their aggression (to make a good first impression) and fighting with each other is what's messing Matt & Ashley up... (That's a good point actually.)
1st train: Jelani & Jenny, Jeff & Jackie and Laura & Tyler
2nd train: Aly & Steve
3rd train: Harley & Jonathan, Bergen & Kurt and Mike & Rochelle
4th train: Matt & Ashley and Hayley & Blair.
-8:20am - CJ & Libby are finally heading out and hoping the bullet train will help them catch up. We find out they've known each other all their lives and been dating for 10years. She wants him to put a ring on it and he wants to be more financially stable before that happens (excuses, excuses...)
Nagano - the first three teams get to the castle and get the clue to the ROADBLOCK - Who can think outside the box?
-One person from each team will have to figure out how to open a Japanese puzzle box to get the password inside it, which they will then have to repeat to the castle guards in order to get their next clue.
-Randomly hidden in one of the clues is the ticket to Date Night, one couple will get to enjoy a relaxing night during the Pit Stop.
-Jeff, Tyler and Jelani are going to be working on the puzzle boxes. (Hmm, I would save the guys for a more physically demanding Roadblock, but I guess that's just me.)
-When they get to where they'll have to work on the puzzle boxes, there are guys playing drums and gongs... they're really making sure they can't hear themselves think while working on the puzzles. (Great.)
-Cutey Tyler is also a smarty pants, he's figuring out the box and calmly, methodically starts to work it open.
-Meanwhile, Libby & CJ have finally bought their tickets to Nagano - these two seem to be stuck in 2nd gear - (where is the urgency? You're on a Race.) Then they pose for a selfie beside the train... and it pulls away - OMG! They missed their train because of this new selfie cam crap... (they deserve to go home, I'm sorry but, seriously?) #SelfieFail is right! So instead of the 9:04 train, they are now on the 9:20 train. (I can't even - that was totally their own fault.)
-Back at the puzzle boxes; the girls are all saying they've got the smartest dude... but it's Tyler who got the clue out first and they get the clue to head to Nishi-Guchi Zenko-Ji (something like that) to get their next clue.
-Libby & CJ finally get on a train leaving Tokyo... and the 2nd train arrives in Nagano with Aly & Steven hoping the Olympic city will bring them some luck.
-3rd train arrives as well and four more teams are heading for the Roadblock.
-Back at the puzzle boxes, Jelani is the next to get his box open and Jeff is totally frustrated, he's regretting saying he was good with puzzles... And Aly arrives to start working on a box.
-Laura & Tyler get to Nishi-Guchi...and find a choice in the DETOUR: Chair or Share. They choose Share: Nourish each other in the face of adversity to earn your next clue.
-Jelani & Jenny also choose the Share detour.
-4th train arrives with Matt & Ashley and Blair & Hayley, the medical team didn't realize the hairstylists were on the same train until they got to the station and Blair wasn't happy about it.
-Olympian Aly is the next one to solve the puzzle box, leaving Jeff still struggling with it... Showgirl Jackie is not impressed... until he finally gets the darn thing open.
-Libby & CJ's bad luck is holding - their bullet train had an emergency stop so it's only moving 1/2 speed, "more like the bullet's still in the chamber," CJ says.
-Back at the puzzle boxes; truck stop Mike is enjoying the drumming, giving him something to groove to while he figures out the box.
Harley & Bergen quickly follow and we have three more guys playing with their boxes.
SHARE - Tyler & Laura arrive at a restaurant and Phil explains in this Detour they will have to feed each other noodles using only chop sticks, while sitting in front of a fan. Once they eat all the noodles in their bowls, they'll get their next clue.
-Off they go and yes, this is going to be messy as the noodles are flapping in the breeze.
-Steve & Aly are the next to the Detour clues and they choose CHAIR - it only says something about ancient training techniques.
-Share - Laura is eating as much of her hair as noodles and has to put her hair up as Jenny & Jelani get there... and yes, Jenny is an expert at slurping those noodles back - Jelani knows he has the best partner any of them could have hoped for in this challenge and the Race. (He seems smitten, and she's just driven, if she needs to drag him along she will :))
-Back at the puzzle boxes, Jonathan and Rochelle are shouting encouragement (You got it, Babe!) to their partners and Bergen was looking for his ... Kurt is relationship challenged, he would find someone yelling at him while he was working annoying so he didn't... plus, I don't think he's that enamoured with Bergen.
-Mike solves the puzzle and they leave.
-Ashley & Hayley arrive and the girls start working on the puzzle boxes along side Harley and Bergen.
-Back at Noodle love - Tyler & Laura are the first team done and they get the clue to the Pit Stop: Patio Daimon a popular restaurant complex in Nagano. Outside, their cab driver had left so they are scrambling looking for a taxi.
-Jenny & Jelani finish right behind them and had their cab driver wait so they head out right away. Tyler & Laura are kicking themselves but find a taxi and head out behind them now.
-CJ & Libby finally arrive in Nagano and head for the puzzle boxes.
-Jackie & Jeff choose the Chair Detour. Jackie says they're not sharing with anyone, they're chair people. (I can see that about her.)
CHAIR - Aly & Steven arrive at the Nagano Memorial Olympic Arena (you can't tell me that someone didn't steer these two towards choosing this Detour... it couldn't be more suited to them.)
-They will have to put on skates and push each other around the Speed Skating oval, with one person sitting on a plexi-glass chair and the other pushing for a lap, then switching places for a second lap. If they can complete the two laps in under 3:55 - they'll get the next clue. Aly is a speed skater and Steven a bobsledder... (I mean, come on, this task was made for them.)
-Off they go with Steven pushing, he's used to pushing on ice - and she's a skater, so it might have been difficult for normal people but they made it look easy finishing easily the first try in 3:30.
-Back at the puzzle boxes - Harley is the next one finished and he and Jonathan choose the clue with the Date Night ticket, they'll get to relax at some Japanese Hot Springs during the Pit Stop (nice!)
-We finally see Kurt cheering, Go Bergen Go! And he is the next one to open the box.
-Ashley opens the box and leaves Hayley still working frustratedly... Blair is trying to be supportive and not annoying... and Hayley finally opens the puzzle box.
-CJ & Libby get to the Roadblock clue and Libby's going to be doing the puzzle box.
-TruckStopLove chooses the CHAIR Detour and somehow I don't think it's going to go so easily for them.
-Jonathan & Harley and Kurt & Bergen get the Detour clues at the same time and decide to do the same one - SHARE.
-Libby gets the puzzle box open - Good for her!
CHAIR - Jeff & Jackie are getting suited up and they're still all flirty, these two got cute hats with ears - and Jackie falls down trying to push the chair (yup, normal people are going to have a hard time.)
SHARE - Jonathan & Harley are enjoying the noodles because they're so hungry but Kurt, not so much, he's struggling to choke them down.
CHAIR - Jeff & Jackie fail on their first attempt - 4:15 - they'll have to go again... and again.
-Mike & Rochelle show up and she's saying this is right up her alley (being a roller derby chick... but these are ice skates, not quite the same.) Rochelle gets the first lap down but Mike can't skate - at - all. He falls, gets up, falls again.
-Jeff & Jackie just squeak by at 3:54.
Detour clues - Blair & Hayley choose Chair.
CJ & Libby choose Share.
SHARE - Jonathan & Harley find the sloppy noodles amusing. While there is trouble in paradise with Bergen trying to get Kurt to eat huge wads of noodles at a time while he feels like being sick.
-Jonathan & Harley leave Kurt & Bergen in the dust... but they finally choke down all the noodles and get a pass from the Noodle Nazi.
-Back at Chair - Mike & Rochelle are on their third or so attempt and getting close to the finish line but Mike wipes out again and drives the chair into the wall so Rochelle falls on her wrist (which she used to push herself up I might add...) but then she limps off and asks for a medic ... really? Roller Derby girl is crying again, she's the only one who's cried in both episodes -( huh, I wouldn't have pegged her as a weeper.)
They discuss switching Detours but Rochelle doesn't want to, especially since no other teams are there... and then Matt & Ashley show up - to Mike it's a sign but Rochelle doesn't want to quit - he finally convinces her that he doesn't think he can do this one and she concedes to changing detours.
-Matt & Ashley don't make the time on their first attempt but they have a strategy going into the second attempt... and they make it in 3:47.
-Share - Mike & Rochelle are ready to dive into their noodles.. but shoving the whole bowl of noodles in Mike's mouth at once backfires when he starts gagging and has to spit them back in the bowl (ew.) She has much more luck with her smaller helping.
-Chair - Blair & Hayley are finally there and making their way around the track - well Blair can skate but then Hayley can barely get him moving on the chair - they finish in 6:45. She complains that he was so heavy in the chair and he says, "you calling me fat?" (Ha, I think he's over her, completely.)
Share - Mike & Rochelle powered through those noodles with no further injury. Eating challenges - right up their alley.
Share - Libby & CJ are enjoying the noodles - they were both starving so it's only the fan they have to fight with to get those slippery things in their mouths.
Chair - Blair & Hayley are almost finished on time with him helping her push with his feet but then she falls and they fail again. Finally she suggests that maybe she go first and he pushes the last lap (duh.) And that does the trick they make it exactly on 3:55!
Share - CJ & Libby slurp up the last of the noodles and head for the Pit Stop.
Here's How They Finished:
1) Jelani & Jenny - these two are proving to be the team to beat - first place two legs in a row - and they won a FitBit Wellness Pack (Wow, you can definitely tell they have some new sponsors this season.) They avoid Phil's question about a love connection at this point.
2) Tyler & Laura - they also dodge the romantic question - saying they are doing a good job as partners but just seeing dollar signs right now.
-More annoying selfies... I thought it was kinda cool the first episode but with CJ & Libby missing the train and then people stopping to take selfies when they finish a challenge, it's just stupid to waste time doing that when you're on a Race where they'll filming you the whole time... Am I alone?
3) Aly & Steven - Nagano has a place in her heart for sure.
4) Harley & Jonathan - they are the old guys on the Race now and the Date Night of relaxation will really help them get their heads cleared for the Race.
5) Bergen & Kurt - they're happy with that placing.
6) Jackie & Jeff - Jackie says she's so happy with her partner, "He's Perfect." Whoa! Yeah, Phil doesn't let that slip by... but I'm sure Jackie says stuff like that all the time and it really means nothing.
7) Matt & Ashley - They love each other to death, they've got a good thing.
8) Mike & Rochelle - Phil tells them they are team number 8 and Mike's beard is thriving (I think Phil's jealous of the face pelt Mike is sporting.)
9) Blair & Hayley - Blair recognizes the guy standing with Phil is dressed like a break-dancer and Phil gets Blair to demonstrate a move before informing them... that they are still in the Race. (I'm not sure if they were relieved or not, I think they're both ready for this blind date to be over... but they would like to win the money, so they better hit their stride soon.)
10) Libby & CJ - ***ELIMINATED*** They knew it was coming so they were still all smiles. CJ says he's always happy being with this woman... but I guess we'll never know if they get married or not.
And their elimination also takes Cara & Alex L, Tori K, Krista H, Elaine R and Shane B out of the pool.
Next week: They head to Thailand - they show us some waterskiing face plants and the honeymoon is over for Blair & Hayley as she is sniping at him to listen to her instead of running around and doing it wrong. (Well, we all knew that was coming.)

I thought it was kinda cool the first episode but with CJ & Libby missing the train and then people stopping to take selfies when they finish a challenge, it's just stupid to waste time doing that when you're on a Race where they'll filming you the whole time... Am I alone?
3) Aly & Steven - Nagano has a place in her heart for sure.
4) Harley & Jonathan - they are the old guys on the Race now and the Date Night of relaxation will really help them get their heads cleared for the Race.
5) Bergen & Kurt - they're happy with that placing.
6) Jackie & Jeff - Jackie says she's so happy with her partner, "He's Perfect." Whoa! Yeah, Phil doesn't let that slip by... but I'm sure Jackie says stuff like that all the time and it really means nothing.
7) Matt & Ashley - They love each other to death, they've got a good thing.
8) Mike & Rochelle - Phil tells them they are team number 8 and Mike's beard is thriving (I think Phil's jealous of the face pelt Mike is sporting.)
9) Blair & Hayley - Blair recognizes the guy standing with Phil is dressed like a break-dancer and Phil gets Blair to demonstrate a move before informing them... that they are still in the Race. (I'm not sure if they were relieved or not, I think they're both ready for this blind date to be over... but they would like to win the money, so they better hit their stride soon.)
10) Libby & CJ - ***ELIMINATED*** They knew it was coming so they were still all smiles. CJ says he's always happy being with this woman... but I guess we'll never know if they get married or not.
And their elimination also takes Cara & Alex L, Tori K, Krista H, Elaine R and Shane B out of the pool.
Next week: They head to Thailand - they show us some waterskiing face plants and the honeymoon is over for Blair & Hayley as she is sniping at him to listen to her instead of running around and doing it wrong. (Well, we all knew that was coming.)
